หลายๆคนอาจจะสงสัยว่าวาฬ ช่วยลดโลกร้อนได้ยังไง? รายงานของกองทุนการเงินระหว่างประเทศ หรือ IMF ในหัวข้อ Nature’s Solution to Climate Change ระบุว่า ‘วาฬ’ หรือที่นิยมเรียกว่าวาฬ สัตว์เลี้ยงลูกด้วยนมที่มีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในมหาสมุทร คือพระเอกอีกคนหนึ่งที่จะเข้ามาช่วยกู้วิกฤตภาวะโลกร้อน
Have you ever wondered if whales can help us counter climate change? This is a question that gets an answer in the International Monetary Fund’s new report, ‘Nature’s Solution to Climate Change’. The report reveals that whales, the world’s biggest mammal, are a perhaps unexpected hero of the environment and that they may be able to help humanity slow the rate at which the world is warming.

Whales and especially the largest of these, which are in the baleen group, have bodies that are so huge that they act as a significant store of carbon, though in addition to this, whales are also an important factor in ensuring the well-being of the entire aquatic ecosystem, and they thus play a major role in keeping the whole biosphere healthy. For example, when whales surface, they often release enormous quantities of bodily waste, which then helps to fertilize the seas and to sustain oceanic food chains. Even in death, whales help to sustain the lives of other sea creatures, and as their bodies fall to the ocean floor, as many as 400 different species will benefit directly from their decay.

Researchers are thus insistent that we should pay extremely close attention to whale populations worldwide, although almost every month, we see new stories of whale deaths, whether that’s from strandings on beaches or the tragedy of whale corpses revealing stomachs packed full of plastic waste. Now more than ever, we need to concern ourselves with the fate of these oceanic giants, and to ensure that we don’t see even fewer of these seafaring heroes of the environment, it’s imperative that we remove the dangers that they face at sea, especially those produced by human carelessness.

We now need to act on this knowledge, and so in addition to planting saplings and protecting the forests, let’s also redouble our efforts to save the whales; this is a route to climate security that we can no longer afford to ignore.
