Let’s find out about tropical cyclones, a particular kind of storm that forms out at sea.

30 October 2022

Tropical cyclones begin to form at sea when sea surface temperatures rise above 26.5 °C, and so they’re most often seen in equatorial regions. These storms develop a spiral form when they’re at sea but usually, they begin to lose strength when they reach land. At this point, they degrade into a depression and then dissipate as the air temperature changes and the storm is cut off from additional energy and moisture. However, if a cyclone develops far out to sea, there is a chance that it’ll be able to build up enough energy to become a typhoon or a hurricane.

3 The strongest and most damaging storms ever to hit Thailand

1. Typhoon Linda – This led to flash floods in the South, especially in Prachuap Kiri Khan (1997).

2. Typhoon Gay – This caused widespread flooding across the South, especially in Chumphon (1989).

3. Storm Harriet – This devastated the Laem Talumphuk area in Nakhon Si Thammarat, leading to hundreds of deaths and leaving thousands homeless (1962).

Climate change is one of the gravest problems that we face, and among the many dangerous consequences of a warming world are rising sea temperatures since these are helping to make tropical storms much more common than in the past. As climate chaos worsens, it is therefore imperative that we work harder than ever to raise awareness of our predicament and to strive towards long-term solutions that will reduce the impacts of this problem.
